Rimonabant (Acomplia) Study
In a study undertaken by Brazil's University of Rio de
Janeiro; Researchers
included graduate student Taisi Arins MSc. Four studies on Acomplia's use
were reviewed in more than 6,600 obese and overweight adults.
Participants took Acomplia in greater or lesser doses
(5 - 20 milligrams daily) or placebo pills containing no medicine one or two
years.
Participants did not only take pills they removed
approximately 600 calories from their normal daily diet.
Waists Slimmed and Pounds Lost
Key question of the Studies: Who lost the most weight?
The answer: Participants taking a greater dose of
Acomplia.
In one year's time, an average of approximately 11
pounds more than the placebo group was lost by participants taking Acomplia.
Dieters on a lower dose of Acomplia lost on average 3
pounds more than the placebo group during a one year period.
Both Acomplia groups trimmed their waists: the higher
dose by one and a half inches and half an inch for the group using the lower
dosage.
People on the higher dose demonstrated more
improvement in cholesterol levels and blood pressure than those taking a
lower dose or the placebo.
However the higher dose of Acomplia may accompany more
risk. People taking a larger dose of Acomplia were more likely to experience
adverse effects, it was noted that the nervous system/ psychiatric and
gastrointestinal system were affected.
More Studies Are Required
While it is of potential benefit to lose even modest
amounts of weigh it was noted that people taking the higher dose of Acomplia
had weight loss of approximately 5% of their body weight. On the other hand,
there was a call for caution when interpreting the results.
Regrettably approximately 40% of the participants left
the study early and not one of the studies met with the reviewers' highest
standards.
Arins’ team has requested that a more rigorous study
should be undertaken prior to making any recommendations regarding the
drug's use for overweight and obese patients.
Reviewers have stated that drug-free methods should
remain the cornerstone for the treatment of obesity.
This might appear to sound simple, but correct diet
and exercise is easier for some people than others.
If you are keen to lose weight, first consult with
your doctor in order to commence with a healthy weight loss regime.
